The path offers some of the most incredible views we’ve ever seen. You will catch the sights of the Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri, ancient rural buildings, and the Tyrrhenian sea along this amazing hike.

We have done many hikes in our travels, and this one was the most memorable.

Is Path of the Gods a hard hike?
The Path of The Gods is a moderate hike but can be challenging, especially if you’re not used to hiking or have limited experience. The terrain is rocky and uneven and there are some cliff drops on the side of the trail in spots. If you’re in pretty good shape and not extremely afraid of heights, you should be just fine in successfully completing the hike.
Where does Path of the Gods start and end?
Hiking The Path of The Gods can be done in both directions, but the most common and easiest route is starting in Bomerano and ending in Nocelle. It is also possible to start in Nocelle or Positano, although much more strenuous.
Starting in Bomerano
Beginning the Path of the Gods in Bomerano allows hikers to gradually descend the mountain, taking in the views along the way. For the easiest option, finish the journey in Nocelle and hire a ride back to your lodging. Continuing to Positano from Nocelle is also common, but the descent isn’t so gradual. The descent from Nocelle to Positano is notoriously steep and requires climbing down the famous 1,500 steps leading to the town, making it a difficult but rewarding journey.
Starting in Nocelle
Starting from Nocelle is also an option, but it’s a more difficult route that requires a lot more energy, as you’ll be hiking uphill. The trail is cab be steep and rocky in parts, making it a challenging hike. However, for those who are up for the challenge, the views from the top are well worth it. We would recommend this direction for more experienced hikers who are able to tolerate the steep elevation gains.
Starting in Positano
If you start from Positano, you’ll need to hike up the 1,500 stairs to Nocelle and the official start of The Path of the Gods. This route is not for the faint of heart and requires a high level of fitness. Going down those stairs left us with sore legs; I can’t imagine climbing up.
Best Times of Year to Hike The Path of The Gods
The best times of year to hike The Path of The Gods are in the spring and fall, between April and June, and September to October. During these months, the weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller, making it easier to enjoy the trail without feeling overwhelmed.
The average temperatures on the Amalfi Coast by month vary but are generally mild. In the summer months of July and August, temperatures can reach as high as 30°C (86°F), while in the winter months of December to February, temperatures can drop as low as 10°C (50°F). It’s important to check the weather forecast before setting out on the hike and to bring appropriate clothing and gear for the day. The path could become slippery if rain is in the forecast, and you may wish to postpone your hike for a clear day.
We hiked in February and it got quite warm during the afternoon. However, it was a sunny, clear day.

- First Aid Kit: It’s always best to be prepared. Pack a small first aid kit with some bandages, antiseptic cream, and pain relief medication.
- Map: You’ve got your phone with GPS on it, sure, but if you can snag a paper map of the Path of the Gods route, we’d recommend it.

This is not a hike to attempt in your beach sandals! Don’t bring fresh shoes or boots, break in your footwear before the hike.
- Hat and Sunglasses: Definitely bring some sunglasses. If you’re not a hat person, something to put over your head when the sun starts to beat down would be a good idea. Protect your head and eyes from the sun.

Where to Stay to Hike The Path of the Gods
There are plenty of accommodation options for those wanting to hike The Path of The Gods. If you want to stay near the coast, Positano, Praiano, and Amalfi are great options, but you’ll need to arrange for a driver to take you to Bomerano or take the bus. We stayed in Positano and had Positano Concierge arrange for a driver to pick us up and drop us off in Bomerano, right at the trailhead. (We also arranged an airport transfer to Naples with them. They’re great, highly recommended!)
Staying in Bomerano or the nearby village of Agerola is ideal if you’d like to stay up in the hills, near the start of The Path of The Gods. Bomerano is the most convenient starting point for the hike and offers a range of accommodation options, including hotels, B&Bs, and hostels. Agerola is a quieter option, with plenty of guesthouses and apartments for rent. You would need to arrange for transportation back to your lodging at the end of the hike.
